HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU CLEAN YOUR CARPETS?

Are you curious whether you are taking care of the carpeting in your home as frequently as required? Maybe you think a carpet cleaner would be a good investment? How often should you clean your carpets is a common question to us at Dryology.

There is no one single answer; cleaning frequency depends on your lifestyle and the benefits of doing so. But there is one golden rule and that is vacuum carpets twice a week and have them professionally cleaned once a year.

Variations to this rule depend on the following factors:

  • Do children live in the house?
  • Do you have a dog or cat?
  • Does anyone smoke in the house?
  • Does the family wear shoes in the house?
  • Does anyone have allergies or respiratory issues?
  • The weight of foot traffic on the carpet.

So how do you work it out? One way is to view it in terms of soil rating:

Light soil

Little foot traffic, room not used very much

Vacuum – once per week

Deep cleaning – every 12-18 months

Medium Soil

Family house with children

Vacuum – 1-2 times every week

Deep cleaning – every 6-12 months

Heavy Soil

Family home with children, pets, and smokers

Vacuum – 2-4 times per week

Deep cleaning – every 3-6 months

Extreme Soil

Large families with multiple pets

Vacuum – daily

Deep cleaning – every 2-3 months

Why Should You Have Your Carpets Professionally Cleaned?

If you have to clean your carpets every few months, it is probably worth investing in a carpet cleaner. But if not, there are still good reasons and benefits to calling in a professional carpet cleaning company.

  • Regular cleaning prolongs the life of your carpet(s).

Over time, dirt and debris accumulates in the fibres of your carpet. This debris will gradually degrade and damage your carpet. Vacuuming can only remove some of this build-up. Deep cleaning will do the rest.

  • Dangerous particles are destroyed.

The debris that builds up can be mud and dirt, bits of food, vegetable/foliage matter, dust, and pet dander. These can make your carpet smell bad and also be a breeding ground for germs and bacteria. The chemicals used in the carpet cleaner safely remove these items that can be a health risk.

  • Carpets will look and smell great

Cleaning the carpet brings up the nap by reinvigorating the fibres so your carpet looks as good as new. And because the offending particles have been removed, the cleaned carpets smell good too.
